Wôpanâak Seasons Book Launch in Martha’s Vineyard

Posted on

At a recent author event covered by the Vineyard Gazette, Tradewind Books proudly celebrated the launch of Wôpanâak Seasons, by Carrie Anne Vanderhoop of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Hosted at the Aquinnah Cultural Center, the event drew community members, young readers, and tribal elders for a joyful gathering filled with storytelling, language, and reflection. Vanderhoop read aloud from her book, answered questions about her creative process, and spoke about the importance of cultural representation in children’s literature.

Published by Tradewind Books, Wôpanâak Seasons offers a lyrical journey through the four seasons in Aquinnah, guided by a young narrator named Akeeahm8s. Woven with Wôpanâak language and themes of land, tradition, and resilience, the book reflects Tradewind’s dedication to publishing diverse, meaningful stories. The launch marked not just a milestone for the author, but a celebration of community, language revitalization, and Indigenous storytelling.
