We ask you to show in your cover letter that you have read at least three of our books in the genre of your submission. All submissions must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope. We try to respond within three months.

Please do not submit more than one manuscript at a time. We will not consider multiple manuscripts submitted in the same envelope.

We do not accept electronic submissions.

Types of Submission

Picture Books:
We accept submissions from both writers and illustrators. Writers should submit an entire manuscript. Writers should not contact an illustrator. If your pcture book manuscript is accepted for publication, we will arrange for it to be illustrated. When you submit your picture book story, please do not paginate.

If you are a professional illustrator submitting a picture book, please include the manuscript and a dummy book with at least three full color illustrations. Do not send original artwork.

Chapter Books and Middle-Grade Fiction:
Please submit the first three chapters, a chapter outline and a plot summary.

Young Adult Fiction:
We accept YA fiction only from Canadian authors. Please submit a plot summary, a chapter outline, and two sample chapters. Do not send entire manuscripts.

Poetry:

Please send a book-length collection only.

Non-fiction:
We do not publish information books.

Illustrators:

We accept picture book projects and sample illustrations. The sample illustrations will be kept for reference. To submit a picture book, please see guidelines for picture books above. Address the sample illustrations to Carol Frank, our Art Director.

Submissions by non-Canadians:

Tradewind cannot accept novels by non-Canadian authors unless they are chapter books to be illustrated. We can accept submissions for picture books; however, we do very few picture books each year.

Recommendations

We recommend previously unpublished authors join the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). There are chapters everywhere in North America and internationally in many countries around the world.
